AVI-06. ALEGRIA LAGOON

eparting from the hotel and taking the Panamerican Highway to the department of Usulutan, we will appreciate a spectacular view of the lake of Ilopango, passing through the towns of San Sebastián and San Vicente, observing its imposing volcano of “Chichontepec”, along with an impressive panoramic view of the valley of Jiboa, and crossing the largest river of El Salvador, “Lempa”. Above the Sierra of Chinameca and with an approximate altitude of 1240 msnm we arrive at the city of “Alegría,” town named in honor of the Presbiterian José Miguel Alegría, renowned Latin professor that founded a school of Philosophy in the town of Tecapa around 1838. In 1891 the name of the town of Tecapa was replaced with its actual name of “Alegría”. We will visit the local Parish constructed in 1870 that shelters the remains of this famous professor. Walking through the town, we will visit its central park where the monument of the distinguished teacher stands. You will have the opportunity to visit the home of one of El Salvador’s most distinguished teacher and thinker Don Alberto Masferrer as well as the home of the former president Manuel Enrique Araujo. In our trip we will also visit the Volcano of “Tecapa,” that means “lake of stones”; in the crater of this volcano we discover the small lagoon of sulphuric waters called “Laguna de Alegría”.
During our visit to this town you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful climate; surrounded by coffee plantations that make up the towns principal patrimony besides the cultivation of ornamental plants. In the afternoon we will return to San Salvador taking the panoramic Coastal Highway appreciating a view of the bay of Jiquilisco.
